SA bands give back to charity for World Aids Day

Easy Tiger

Evolver One, Garth Taylor, Lonehill Estate, Easy Tiger, Christian Heath Band, Son of A 1000, Mantis Moon, Cover Up, A Boy Called Wolf Ears and Bonsai performed free of charge to help raise funds for Hugh’s Haven at the World Aids Day concert hosted at JET at the Dome on World Aids Day, December 1, 2011.

Hugh’s Haven is a day care centre in Yeoville. They offer a safe place for kids to be looked after whilst their parents are out at work. Most of the parents are unable to make any contribution towards this care.

The event was hosted by Northridge Ladies Circle, a charity organisation that helps raise funds for homes, charities and individuals within the community.

About Hugh’s Haven
Hugh's Haven is a nursery, preschool and aftercare facility for about 80 children who all come from financially and socially disadvantaged backgrounds. Hugh's Haven is located in the middle of Yeoville on 62 Webb Street, corner Kenmere.

"Hugh's Haven" is named after Hugh Begg, a CNN and CBS journalist from New Zealand who came to South Africa on an assignment, but decided to stay and make a difference for the children of South Africa. Having previously been a millionaire, wealth was no objective for Hugh.

Hugh adopted 10 children from war zones around the world and made sure that their upbringing and education was taken care of in Australia. On 29 July 2005, Hugh was murdered in Yeoville protecting the children of the centre that now carries his name.

Most of the children are from single parent homes and HIV/TB affixed households, mostly domestic workers, street hawkers and unemployed people looking for work. If the parent(s) is away the children are often left alone or with a neighbour they often do not know, exposing them to abuse or negligence.

Several thousands of children live in Yeoville under these conditions. If not taken care of, the children will grow up with the same social inheritance and most likely end up in poverty, abuse, and some sort of crime.
