When planning to leave your home, or to close your business, to go on extended leave, or even just to take a long weekend away, there are certain things that we recommend you consider before leaving:
The first thing to consider doing is to check your alarm system. Ensure that you have tested your alarm system with your security company by phoning the control room and letting them know that you are testing.
The objective is to test that your alarm is functioning correctly and that your control room is receiving the signals.
Don’t wait until the day before leaving as you could find technicians are not that readily available, do the test at least 4 days before leaving.
Remember if you have an alarm system, and have pets, you must not leave a window open for a pet, they should either be adequately housed outside the house, or should be kenneled, to avoid the risk of false alarms reducing the priority of the alarm signals from your premises due to excessive false alarms.
Ensure that you have key holders, who have access to your premises, and authority to approve any repair expenses, available in town whilst you are away, and that your security company has their contact details, this is crucial should there be an incident on your property and repairs are required.
Make sure that your doors and windows are closed and properly secured, and that you have notified your neighbours, or a friend, that you will be away and also leave your contact details with them in case of an emergency.
You may also wish to get the details changed on your estate intercom system to assist the guards with confirming access over the period you are away.
Any deliveries, especially newspapers and mail should be diverted or collected by your key holder.
You should consider getting advice on options to increase the security of your property with additional security gates and detection devices that will retard access efforts and activate a response.
Lights with automatic timers are also a great way to fool any would be burglar into thinking someone is home.
We are finding that more and more common theft in complexes is committed internally by people staying within.
Please report any suspicious activity to our 24 hour control room on 086 111 4021.
